TURNED SHAFTS
A carefully put together selection of native and exotic timbers for day to day walking stick, dress canes and other special applications.
Indian Rosewood shafts
Long time sourcing and in careful drying time, we can now offer two lengths of these strikingly grained Rosewood shafts. Outstanding burgundy, blue and grey graining with occasional orange flashes, typically Rosewood.
Standard 900mm ( 36" ) as we have sold before and a very limited number of longer pieces.
Seconds are a little out of straight and may be easily corrected with a little heat and flexing.
All sticks are 23/19 in taper.

OAK & ASH SHAFTS
Super strong sports grade Canadian Ash (pictured) and selected English Oak shafts.
Striking mature "dogtooth" type graining in both, the Oak shafts often further enhanced by striking medullary markings. Both may be further enhanced with the use of certain staining & finishing techniques such as liming and washing with Indian ink / similar.
Two lengths
50" ( 1250mm )
36" ( 900mm )
....and two weights...
Heavier 25mm / 20mm taper.
Lighter 23 / 16mm taper.
The shorter sticks are genuinely strong and most useful for making up sticks where support and appearance is required.

BLACK PALMIRA SHAFTS
Black Indian Palmira, sometimes called "Porcupine Wood" or "Kitul", is a heavy, dramatically figured wood, characterised by hard, very dark, almost black streaks, interlaced with light, cream/grey background and crossed at regular intervals by horizontal "bars". The timber is notoriously difficult to turn, but when this is done properly, as you will see in the illustrative example to the right, is very, very special indeed. The best will be brought out in it by careful oiling, but an equally acceptable finished appearance may be attained through the application of a quality hardglaze lacquer.
23 / 18mm taper.

Padauk shafts
900mm long ( 36" )
Choice of 23mm top / 18mm base
or
26mm top / 23mm base diameters.
This lighter weight Central African exotic is a rich orange colour and oils / lacquers a rich red ochre / deep warm orange. The thicker shafts, owing to their comparative light weight are ideal as true "support canes" combining exotic elegance and genuine functionality
Drive pips from the turning operation are left ON, ( if you have a lathe with a long bed, these will assist in modifying / rebating / finishing )
Seconds ( 23 / 18's only ) are only very slightly off straight and may be readily "corrected" with the application of steam / dry heat.
